Speaking to Sudans Post on Tuesday, Ruweng information minister Simon Chol confirmed the arrests and said the demonstration involved 14 people.
“The seven people arrested are part of 14 protesters who yesterday demanded the removal of the chief administrator,” Chol said, adding that the protest was not representative of all citizens in the administrative area.
Chol alleged that some of the protesters were influenced by political actors in Juba seeking the chief administrator’s position.
“Those protesters will be investigated by the government to determine their motives. I believe they will reveal the involvement of political figures in Juba who supported yesterday’s protest,” Chol said.
He also stated that efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining seven protesters, who are reportedly in hiding.
The demonstration, described as peaceful, marked growing dissatisfaction among some residents with the local leadership.
However, authorities insist the protest lacked widespread support across Ruweng.
