JUBA – At least 3 civilians have reportedly been killed and an 8-year-old boy abducted during an attack by suspected armed herders from Jonglei State in Lobonok Payam of Central Equatoria State, a community leader said.

Cirislo Lege Zakaria, Chairperson for Lobonok Development and Cultural Association said the incident occurred on the 16th of May during the occasion to mark SPLA Day.

“We, the Lobonok Development and Cultural Association (LODCA) express our dismay even as we empathize with the people of Lobonok following the attack and killings in Nyarjuwa village,” Zakaria said during a press conference in Juba on Thursday.

“During 10:00 pm on Monday, 16th May 2022, three innocent’s lives were lost and an 8-year-old boy was abducted by suspected marauding well-armed cattle herders from neighboring Jonglei State.”

Zakaria condemned the killing of innocent civilians and called on concerned authorities to take stern action to ensure perpetrators are brought to book.

“We condemn the heinous and barbaric attacks in the strongest terms possible and appeal to concerned authorities to take stern action and ensure perpetrators are brought to book,” Zakaria said.

He extended their profound heartfelt condolences to the affected families for the losses they suffered during the attack.

“The attack happened on SPLM Day, a day we ought to celebrate the sacrifices by our gallant men and women who paid the price of our independence through their lives,” he said.

He called on the national government to strengthen law enforcement, investigate these crimes, and bring the perpetrators swiftly to justice.

“We call on security agencies to speed up investigations to rescue the abducted boy and ensure justice is served to distressed people of Lobonok community,” he said.

The attack in Lobonok follows recent deadly clashes during a raid on a Dinka Bor cattle camp that left at least 23 people dead – including women, children, and elderly people.

The attacks were carried out by suspected Murle armed raiders from the Greater Pibor area, according to Eastern Equatoria State Governor Louis Lobong Lojore.
