RUMBEK – The Muslim community in Lakes State have lauded governor Rin Tueny Mabor and his administration for maintaining peace and stability in the region.
This was at celebrations of Eid-el-Fitr in Rumbek Freedom Square on Wednesday.
The Secretary for the Islamic Council in Lakes State, Jacob Maker Majak thanked citizens for standing with Muslims during the holy month of Ramadhan.
He said the Muslims have peacefully co-existed with the various communities.
Majak specifically thanked Governor Mabor for standing up with Muslims while ensuring that no insecurity incidences were reported during Ramadhan period.
“In the past years, the situation in Rumbek town was tough. Criminals used to break shops at night and loot properties, business items and money. Also, traders moving on the road used to get a lot of problems, but ever since the governor was appointed, all these come to an end in Lakes State and people are now sleeping peacefully without any problem,” he said.
The Sudanese Muslim community chairperson in Rumbek, Sadam Abdelkharim said they held a meeting with the government to harmonize prices on the market.
“I have been in Lakes State for almost 14 years and during that period, there were a lot of communal conflicts between communities where people used to raid and loot each other’s belongings such as cows, goats, business items in the market and people used to be killed. But for the last 3 years, all these things have stopped and everyone is living in peace and there is stability,” he said.
Abdelkarim further said which used to close by 6:00pm now operate till late.
“We appreciate the governor of Lakes State Rin Tueny Mabor for maintaining peace and stability in Lakes. We also extend our appreciation to the president of the Republic of South Sudan for the appointment of the governor for the peace and security stability in Lakes State,” he stressed.
For his part, however, Lakes State minister for Cabinet Affairs, Stephen Mathiang Deng congratulated the Muslim community for peacefully celebrating Eid el Fitr.
“I am also appealing to all of you to pray for your brothers in Sudan because Sudan is part of South Sudan. So, you pray for them to have peace and enjoy the celebration in their life because they have been without peace,” he said.
Deng said the appointment of Mabor as governor has ensured peace prevails.
He thanked the governor for protecting the business communities in the state.
“So, on behalf of the governor and the government of this State. I am appealing to you to cooperate with the government. Sometimes, back we have this problem of dollar prices, but now the national government under the leadership of His Excellency Salva Kiir have put down some measures for the control and it should not move in the wrong hand anyhow,” Stressed the minister.
He urged those in need it dollars to apply for rates fixed by the central bank.
The minister thanked the business community for harmonizing prices on the market.
He said the market is regulated by the government and the business community.
Deng assured Muslims that government would protect their lived and properties.
