Manyuol Luony, a relative of the deceased, told Sudans Post on Wednesday that the victim, identified as PVT Dut Maker Mathot, was riding a motorcycle alongside a colleague when they were hit by a vehicle in the motorcade on Tuesday.
According to Luony, the two officers were returning to Shilluk Police Station after taking a vehicle for washing when the incident occurred.
“After the car was washed, Dut and his colleague were riding back on their motorcycles in police uniform to the station,” he said.
Luony said the driver attached to Adut Salva Kiir’s convoy knocked down the officers, killing Dut instantly and leaving his colleague injured.
“This is where they met their fate after being hit by the driver. Dut Maker died on the spot, while his colleague sustained injuries,” he added.
The incident reportedly happened as a high-level delegation led by Vice President for the Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, alongside Adut Salva Kiir, was returning to their residence following a visit to Ager-Gum Primary School.
Both victims were taken to Rumbek State Hospital, where Dut was pronounced dead. The family said they were initially unaware of the incident until the injured colleague identified the deceased and contacted them.
“We were later called to come and confirm the incident after his colleague traced his identity,” Luony said.
Luony further revealed that the Lakes State government has pledged to provide blood compensation of 51 cows to the family of the deceased officer.
He added that local authorities coordinated with the family’s traditional leadership to facilitate Dut’s burial at his ancestral home.
The government delegation arrived in Rumbek on Sunday ahead of the second graduation ceremony of Rumbek University of Science and Technology, where he was set to preside on behalf of President Salva Kiir.
Beyond the graduation ceremony, the visit also focused on assessing key service sectors, particularly education and health. But what initially appeared to be a noble mission turned into a tragedy.
At the time of publicity, there was no statement from the government about the killing of the traffic police officer.
