AWEIL — Police in Aweil North County of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, have detained a 19-year-old woman accused of strangling her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter to death following a domestic dispute with her husband.
The suspect, identified as Athil Garang Dut Chan, is accused of killing her daughter, Ahok Dut, at their residence in Ariath Payam early this week.
Sergeant Major Wol Atak, an investigator at Ariath Payam, told Sudans Post on Tuesday that the woman was allegedly seen strangling the child to death.
“What happened early this week is that a woman had killed her own baby girl, identified as Ahok, and she is about one-and-a-half years old,” Atak said.
According to Sgt. Wol, the motive behind the alleged killing remains unclear, with police investigations ongoing.
The suspect has been detained at the county headquarters in Gok-Machar as authorities work to establish what led to the incident.
Wol said the woman allegedly dropped the child into a latrine after the killing, a detail he said forms part of the ongoing investigation.
“The woman is allegedly said to have killed the baby and dropped her into a latrine in the area, and that substantiates the claim,” he said.
The investigator urged residents to cooperate with authorities and provide information that could help establish the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
He described the incident as deeply concerning, saying the killing of a person is prohibited under South Sudanese law.
“Such acts are so uncalled for. You can’t see an eye to eye with such a human being, as killing a human being is prohibited in the Constitution. It remains to be seen what the law will say about the mother’s act,” Wol said.
The incident comes weeks after a separate case in Aweil Town, where a young woman was reportedly accused of strangling her two children following a domestic dispute with her spouse.
The woman allegedly killed a boy and a girl before attempting to take her own life. She was later rescued.
