25 cows shot dead to revenge killing of community chief

JUBA, JANUARY 24^th 2023 (SUDANS POST) – Armed youth in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria state have shot dead at least 25 cows, less than two weeks after a community chief was killed by pastoralist in Kajo-Keji County of the troubled state.

Disturbing footages of the animal killing circulated on social media sparking outrage among members of the public with calls on the government to response to crimes in order to prevent citizens from taking laws into their own hands.

Sources reached by Sudans Post said the incident occurred on Monday last Monday.

In a statement, the Kuku youth said they have decided to slaughter the animals to revenge after their community chief was killed without immediate government intervention.

“The community of Kajo-Keji would like to inform the media and the South Sudan government in general that the presence of cattle keepers has created serious insecurity in our county, causing a lot of killing of civilians, raiding our cattle, and grazing in farms,” they said in a statement extended to Sudans Post.

The statement which is recorded said that the Kuku youth have decided to kill the animals to force the armed Jonglei youth return to their land and desist from causing stability to their region.

“Therefore, we, the community of Kajo-Keji, have risen up to take over the sovereignty of our region and to make sure that the cattle keepers go back to their original land,” they added.

Central Equatoria state authorities in Juba and Kajo-Keji were not immediately available for comment.
