The forum is the state’s highest policy platform that brings together local policy actors to Bor town to deliberate on a wide range of policy issues around cattle raiding, communal fights, and road ambushes.
The state has been faced with cattle raiding, communal fights, and road ambushes, among other insecurity concerns attributed to the presence of arms in the hands of civilians.
Speaking during the opening of the forum on Monday, Atong Kuol Manyang, the deputy governor of Jonglei State, said the discussion would focus on measures to enhance the state’s service delivery system.
“You all are here today to know all the directions of your county and to know all the policies in your counties because during a disaster you are the focal people who are there, and that is why I’m feeling very happy to be here today,” said Atong.
Atong said the meeting will address measures to improve intercounty ties and foster trust.
It will also consider strategies to lessen the impact of disasters, security concerns, and the resettlement of internally displaced people, she said.
“We also need to see from the previous commissioner’s forum the things discussed and what has been implemented and what has not been implemented, and what else we need to achieve moving forward.”
For his part, Gilbert Nantsa, UNMISS representative in Jonglei, encouraged the commissioners to ensure discussion concentrate on issues that impact the people positively.
“County commissioners play bigger roles in expending the political environment, UNMISS therefore underscore the need for county commissioners to implement the gubernatorial order 012024 on civil and political space and allow all political parties have equal excess to engage with communities on their political program ahead of the upcoming elections,” said Gilbert.
He underlined that in order to improve state stability, security should be given top priority by the security services.
“UNMISS further called for strengthening collaboration between county commissioners, traditional leaders, and security institutions to enhance stability in Jonglei State,” said Gilbert.
