KUAJOK – At least 47 people have been killed and 49 others injured following two separate incidents of communal violence in Tonj East County of South Sudan’s Warrap State.
The attacks, which occurred in Taber village and Thiek-Nhom cattle camp on April 23 and April 25, 2026, have drawn strong condemnation from William Wol Mayom, the Minister of Information and Communication, who described the violence as tragic and unacceptable.
“The State Government, under the leadership of H.E. Amb. Bol Wek Agoth, the Governor of Warrap State, strongly condemns recent incidents of communal violence, which tragically claimed a total of 47 lives and wounded 49,” Mayom said in a statement seen by Sudan Post.
He provided specific accounts, including an armed attack in Taber village in Ngapagog Payam by unknown criminals on April 23, 2026, at 11:00 pm, which led to the death of seven civilians and the wounding of five.
This was coupled with a more disastrous clash involving Luacjang, Jalwau, and part of Ananatak, which occurred in Thiek-Nhom cattle camp on April 25, 2026, resulting in the death of 40 people and the wounding of 44 others.
He added that this recent senseless violence undermines the gains of peace and stability that the State Government has established in Warrap State. A loss of 47 citizens, the minister said, is a profound tragedy, and we extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families during this incredibly difficult time.
“The Government of Warrap State has already deployed security forces to intervene in preventing further escalation, protect civilian lives, and ensure that those responsible for instigating this violence are held accountable through the law.”
He urged the public to remain calm and refrain from retaliatory tendencies, as the governor has directed that the Special Court currently deployed in Tonj North County be immediately relocated to Tonj East County to address the grievances.
“The State leadership remains dedicated to the safety and security of all its citizens. Acts of lawlessness that threaten the collective well-being of our people shall not be tolerated, and the rich provisions of the State of Emergency shall be utilised to guarantee sustainable peace within the territory of Warrap State.”
He revealed that the State Government remains resolute in its commitment to foster unity and reconciliation and trusts in our traditional leaders, elders, and youth representatives, who have continued to work alongside the state government to identify runaway criminals and resolve outstanding grievances peacefully.
