JUBA — The South Sudan Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA), a Juba-based civil society organization, has expressed skepticism about the feasibility of holding genuinely free and impartial elections by 2026.

Ter Manyang Gatwech, Executive Director for the Center for Peace and Advocacy, cited a range of unresolved challenges that threaten holding a credible, safe, and inclusive electoral process.

“The conditions necessary for free, fair, and credible elections are simply not in place,” Manyang said in a statement extended to Sudans Post on Thursday.

Manyang, a human rights activist, said the country continues to face significant hurdles, including the lack of a permanent constitution, inadequate civic education, poor electoral preparedness, and insufficient resources.

He said the security arrangements remain fragile, raising serious concerns about the safety of voters and election personnel during polling.

“Without urgent action from the transitional government and genuine support from regional and international partners, the prospects for a peaceful and democratic 2026 election are bleak.”

He warned that the continued displacement of South Sudanese citizens—many of whom remain in refugee camps in neighboring countries—poses a major obstacle to ensuring inclusive and participatory elections.

The outspoken activist called on all stakeholders, including the government, regional bodies, and international donors, to prioritize constitutional development, national reconciliation, and the safe return and reintegration of refugees.

“The Center for Peace and Advocacy remains committed to promoting democratic governance, peace, and human rights in South Sudan and will continue to advocate for an electoral process that reflects the will of all South Sudanese people.”
