AWEIL – Authorities in Tonj South County have recovered two assault rifles, 57 stolen livestock, and SSP 1 million after arresting five suspected raiders in a swift security operation in the Lachok (War-Cok) area, county officials said.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Commissioner, the Tonj South County administration said the incident occurred yesterday afternoon when armed criminals raided the Ambororo community, escaping with livestock, weapons, and money.

The statement described the response by security forces as “a swift and decisive security operation” that ensured the stolen property was recovered and suspects apprehended within 24 hours.

According to official reports, the raiders initially escaped with 57 livestock, 1,000,000 South Sudanese Pounds, two AK-47 rifles, two blankets, and two bags.

Following the attack, county government forces launched intensive patrols across the area, leading to the arrest of five suspects, all identified as residents of Tonj South County.

During a formal handover ceremony of the recovered items, Tonj South County Commissioner Col. John Ayitiak Warwien praised the rapid response of security forces and warned against the rise of criminal activity in the county.

“He urged the people of Tonj South to cease these criminal activities. Parents must advise their children against practising such harmful acts in our society,” the statement read.

The commissioner also commended the Chief of Ambororo for showing restraint, noting that he exercised “patience and cooperated with authorities rather than seeking private retaliation.”

The primary victim of the raid, Chief Hammad Clifa, expressed appreciation to the county leadership and security organs for the swift recovery of the stolen property.

Having lived in Tonj South for many years, the chief emphasised the importance of communal coexistence and called on residents to maintain peace and harmony.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Tonj South, Col. Mathony, praised coordination among the various security branches and reaffirmed the police department’s commitment to maintaining law and order. He vowed that the county would not become “a haven for those seeking to disrupt the peace.”

Authorities confirmed that the five suspects remain in custody pending further legal proceedings, while all recovered livestock, firearms, and cash have been returned to Chief Clifa and the Ambororo community.

Local officials say the operation sends a strong message that criminal raids will be met with decisive law enforcement action, reinforcing efforts to stabilise rural communities across Tonj South County.
