Aweil East land survey director among two killed in separate accidents

AWEIL – At least two people, including Awei East County’s Director of Land and Survey, Anei Chan Geng, have died in two separate accidents along the Wanyjok–Malualbaai highway.

According to residents, Geng died from severe injuries he sustained in a collision at Dokul, a location along the busy highway. He was reportedly travelling to Malualbaai to carry out official duties related to land survey and road measurement when the accident occurred.

Eyewitness Adut Deng told this publication that the incident shook the community due to the manner in which it happened and the seniority of the victim. She explained that Geng collided with another motorcyclist who also died shortly after being rushed to Malualkon Hospital.

“The director, Anei Chan Geng, was on his way to Malualbaai for his official duties when he got involved in this tragic accident. He collided with another rider who was later pronounced dead after reaching the hospital,” she recounted.

Deng described the injuries as extremely severe, noting that many residents were distressed by what they saw at the scene. “Some of his bones were badly damaged and protruding. It was very painful for people to witness, especially knowing he was a hardworking director who served the community,” she lamented.

In a separate but similarly tragic incident, the Director of Traffic Police, Diing Reech Diing, confirmed that a pickup truck conductor died earlier in the week in Aweil South County. The conductor reportedly fell from the moving vehicle on Monday and died shortly afterwards.

Reech said both accidents highlight a worsening trend of careless road use in the region, attributing the incidents to overspeeding, poor riding habits, and general negligence.

“One motorist and a conductor died in an accident on Monday. These cases are happening because of poor riding and driving practices,” Reech stated. He urged motorists, cyclists, and passengers to exercise caution and obey traffic rules to prevent further loss of life.

Local authorities continue to appeal to road users to prioritise safety, emphasising that many accidents could be avoided if drivers maintained reasonable speeds and adhered to established traffic laws.
