JUBA – At least one person was killed and two children sustained injuries on Wednesday in a fire that gutted an ammunition depot of Malual Chat in Bor town of South Sudan’s Jonglei.
Jonglei State Police Commissioner, Major General John Bak, told Sudans Post on Thursday that a young girl was killed in the fire that burned the ammunition storage at Malual Chat in Bor on Wednesday evening.
Bak stated that hot weather was suspected of being the cause of the incident.
“This Morning we have investigate and found only one little girl affected by the incident and she died, and two other children are injured, and they are in the hospital receiving treatment at Bor state hospital,” said Bak.
According to Bak, the two injured children are undergoing treatment at Jonglei State Main Hospital.
“Most of the residents residing near Malual-chat are the families of the military officers who are working at Malual-chat, and my advice is that when there is an incident like this, they should take control of their children because random movement has caused the life of this little one now,” said Bak.
He also revealed that several houses were reduced to ashes by the explosion.
Speaking to Sudans Post on the condition of anonymity out of fear of retaliation, one of the military officers at Malual-chat claimed that soldiers at the military barrack were responsible for starting the fire.
“Yes, the fire outbreak was caused by some of the soldiers who are working in the Malual-chat military barrack, who are yet to be identified by the investigation team,” he said.
A similar incident occurred in March 2024 when an armaments store at Malual-Chat near Bor was destroyed by a fire that was started by a “giant Nile lizard.”
