The initiative comes after heavy downpours, which have left many low-lying areas of Bor submerged, disrupting daily life and raising concerns about public health. Recently, residents of Nigel, Achiengdir, Lake-Yak and Hai Panjak were displaced by flood waters after the heavy rains in Bor.
“Our priority is the safety and well-being of our citizens. The heavy rains have posed a significant threat, and we needed to act quickly to protect our communities from the rising water levels,” said Jacob Achiek Machar, the Mayor of Bor Municipal Council.
The newly opened water channel is designed to redirect excess rainwater away from residential areas, channelling it towards the dedicated storage facilities.
“We have completed the opening of the water channel last week and currently we have seen some of the residents of Nigel, Achiengdir and Lake-Yak returning to their houses after the water level has subsided,” said Achiek.
Achiek further added that his office is working in order to open another water storage in Pakwau residential areas, citing that they are currently living in floodwater.
However, residents have expressed a mix of relief and gratitude for the municipality’s swift action to rescue them from flooding.
David Chol Kuol, a resident of Achiendir, applauded the office of Mayar for not turning a deaf ear to the resident.
“We were worried about where all this water would go, but the mayor and his team have done a great job. We can already see the water levels starting to go down in our neighbourhood,” Chol.
Phillip Alier Panchol resident of Malou, said the opening of the channel has rescued the innocent residents of Bor town.
“Some of the resident have immediately returned to their houses after the water was dug for this water storage,” said Alier.
The successful opening of the water channel and storage facilities by the Bor Municipality is a testament to effective local governance and a timely intervention that has brought much-needed relief to the residents grappling with the aftermath of the heavy rainfall.
