The deceased, identified as Chuor Yai, was reportedly ambushed around 11:00 a.m. while riding his motorbike from Majok-Yithiou towards Wanyjok town. Local sources say he was carrying a substantial amount of money—estimated at over one million South Sudanese Pounds—believed to be proceeds from his business operations.
Deng Garang, a resident of Mayom-Rok, where the incident occurred, told reporters that Yai was attacked in a forested stretch of the highway near Rumdier, shortly after passing through Malith-Alek-Yai.
“Chuor was originally from Madhol Payam but worked in Majok-Yithiou as a businessman,” Deng explained. “He was on his way to Wanyjok carrying some cash. When he reached Mayom-Rok, he was ambushed by unknown gunmen who shot him in the chest while still on his motorbike.”
According to Deng, the attackers stole the money and fled the scene, leaving Yai to die on the spot. “They took the money and left him lying there. He died immediately,” he said, urging residents living between Mayom-Rok and Rumdier to be vigilant.
Another eyewitness, Santino Manut, confirmed seeing Yai earlier in the day. “He stopped in Malith to take tea and then continued on his bike. About 20 minutes later, we heard he had been shot,” Manut recounted.
Authorities have yet to confirm the motive behind the killing, though robbery is suspected. Local police have reportedly been dispatched to the area to investigate and search for the suspects.
While no arrests have been made, residents believe the killing reflects broader societal challenges. “This kind of violence is a sign of deepening economic hardship,” said one resident. “People are desperate, and criminals are taking advantage of the situation.”
The community has called on law enforcement to step up patrols along the highway and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
