In a statement issued Tuesday, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Martin Elia Lomurö, said preparations were already underway for the reopening of the Council of Ministers’ sessions.
“The Cabinet will officially resume its sessions on Friday, 14th November 2025,” the statement partly read.
Lomurö previously attributed the prolonged break to ongoing renovation works at the Council of Ministers building in Juba.
However, opposition politicians and analysts have pointed to political factors as the real reason for the delay, citing the arrest and ongoing court trial of First Vice President Dr Riek Machar, one of the key signatories to the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement.
To ensure a smooth restart, the Cabinet Affairs Ministry has scheduled an induction training for all ministers on Wednesday, November 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ main hall.
According to Lomurö, the session is intended to “reactivate and refresh the understanding of governance procedures and Cabinet decision-making processes” ahead of the government’s upcoming activities.
“This induction is meant to equip the Cabinet in preparation for a productive session,” Lomurö explained. “We want all ministers to begin this session with a renewed sense of purpose, discipline, and teamwork.”
He emphasised that the readiness and coordination of ministers would be essential to improving executive performance and ensuring the government works efficiently in the months ahead.
Lomurö further directed that the announcement be broadcast widely on national radio and television to ensure all concerned officials receive timely notification.
The resumption of Cabinet sessions is expected to signal a renewed focus on key national priorities, including peace consolidation, service delivery, and economic recovery efforts.
It also comes at a time when the public and international partners are calling for greater government functionality and transparency as South Sudan navigates its delicate transitional period.
Political observers believe that the Cabinet’s return could help restore momentum in implementing stalled reforms under the peace deal and revive confidence in the unity government’s ability to govern effectively after months of inactivity.
