The move follows a high-level meeting between Central Equatoria State Governor Rabi Mujung and Bol Wek Agoth, the Governor of Warrap State in Juba on Monday, aimed to explore potential areas of collaboration between the two regions.
A public statement released Monday evening reveals that the gubernatorial engagement resolved to bolster the party structures in Central Equatoria and Warrap states, regions regarded as SPLM strongholds.
“They also discussed strengthening the SPLM party in both states and preparing the public ahead of the 2026 elections,” read the statement seen by Sudans Post.
In early June, the National Election Commission declared 26th December 2026 as the day for the election despite warnings from pressure groups over the environmental unsuitability for hosting elections, catapulted by critical chapters of the peace agreement awaiting implementation.
The proposed election schedule, which falls within the festive season, has also been criticised by political commentators as a potential scapegoat to justify another election postponement.
But the SPLM, South Sudan’s biggest political party, persistently demonstrated intent to have elections held despite the lack of a level playing field deemed as favourable to the Salva Kiir-led outfit.
Meanwhile, the gubernatorial discussions also centred on collective efforts by both leaders to enhance cooperation through security, promote peace initiatives, trade and cultural programs between the two states.
“Governor Mujung and Governor Wek expressed their commitment to working with each other in exchanging ideas to address the shared concerns,” read the statement.
Both governors also emphasised the importance of cooperation to address common challenges and foster development, highlighting a commitment to strengthen ties between their regions for the benefit of their communities.
