JUBA-The 12th batch of the Chinese medical team on Wednesday donated medicines and equipment to South Sudan’s Juba Teaching Hospital ahead of the festive season.

Speaking during handover ceremony in Juba, Harriet Akello Pasquale, Undersecretary of Ministry of Health, said medicine will help Chinese-built Juba Teaching Hospital to address critical emergency cases expected to stem from road accidents during festive season.

“Every year during Christmas season there is really a high demand of having available sufficient medical supplies,” Pasquale said.

She said with this donation, the state-own hospital will be able to provide essential health services to the population in the capital.

“During Christmas, we normally receive a lot of casualties; people may come due to intoxication of alcohol, injuries and many other diseases, that is why it is important to have available medical supplies in place,” she said.

For his part, Ma Qiang, Chinese Ambassador in South Sudan thanked the Chinese medical team for their dedicated and selfless service to the people of South Sudan.

“Over last 3 months, the Chinese medical team has successfully performed the first esophageal barium meal examination, carried out the first case of Floating Acupuncture Treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as other 5 new technologies,” Ma said

He said the medicine will alleviate the financial burdens of the local patients.

Over the past 12 years, a total of 164 Chinese medical personnel have served in South Sudan, providing medical care to over 70,000 patients, performing more than 1,000 surgeries, and conducting over 1,300 endoscopic examinations.

They have also conducted 21 free clinics in grassroots communities, treating over 30,000 patients.
