AWEIL-Cholera has killed 7 people and infected 2,445 in Aweil town of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, a senior health official said Wednesday.
Jaafar Riiny Riiny, State Minister of Health in the state, told journalists at a press conference on Tuesday informed that seven people had died in Aweil from the cholera outbreak.
According to Rinny, the outbreak was brought on by last year’s flooding as well as inadequate sanitation and hygiene.
“7 people have died of the disease, and 2,445 others are suffering from the disease. It is perilous indeed. So, I urge people to practice good proper hygiene,” Rinny said.
According to Riiny, the disease is spreading widely, as evidenced by the high volume of patients admitted to Aweil Civil Hospital every day.
According to the minister, the number of cases reported at the Wadwil Refugee Camp in Aweil West County, which houses thousands of Sudanese refugees, is increasing.
“We have an NGO called IRC; they are helping us in that camp where the outbreak is serious as well. We call on other partners to intervene in providing us with the ORS,” he said.
He said they are working around the clock to ensure the national Ministry of Health avails cholera vaccines to reduce infections.
He said a similar report of the outbreak has been reported in Aweil West County, where an 8-year-old boy has been reported to have died early this week.
Lual Khamis Lual, Deputy Director of Nyamlel County Hospital, urged the mothers to take preventive measures to protect their children from infection.
