Speaking at the inaugural State Council of Ministers’ meeting under his leadership, Governor Mujung outlined his agenda focused on rooting out graft, enhancing governance, and driving socio-economic progress in Central Equatoria State.
The meeting, held on Thursday, marked Governor Mujung’s first cabinet session since his appointment by President Salva Kiir as the fourth governor of Central Equatoria since South Sudan’s independence in 2011.
Addressing the council, Mujung emphasised that tackling corruption was a cornerstone of his administration’s vision, signalling a zero-tolerance approach to unethical practices. The State Acting Minister of Information and Communication, Jacob Aligo, briefed the media on the governor’s key policy priorities, which aim to transform governance and improve the lives of citizens.
According to Aligo, Governor Mujung articulated a comprehensive plan centred on fostering peace, restoring security, and ensuring effective service delivery.
“The Governor stressed that a peaceful environment is essential for sustainable development,” Aligo said. “He highlighted the need to address pockets of insecurity across the state to provide citizens with safety and stability, creating a conducive environment for developmental activities.”
Mujung directed all state institutions to prioritise efficient service delivery, urging officials to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
The governor’s anti-corruption stance was a central theme of the meeting. “The Governor stressed the need for maintaining transparency and accountability during his tenure. He directed that his government would not entertain any form of corruption,” Aligo said.
Mujung’s commitment to clean governance is seen as a response to longstanding concerns about mismanagement and inefficiency in the state, with the governor pledging to lead by example in fostering a culture of ethical leadership. The effectiveness of his strategy stands to be tested in an administration where corruption has become systemic.
Beyond anti-corruption measures, Governor Mujung outlined additional priorities to address the state’s challenges. He called for strengthening relief and rehabilitation institutions to better respond to crises and natural disasters, which have periodically affected Central Equatoria.
Recognising the economic potential of the state, Mujung reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with local and international investors to revitalise the economy.
Social cohesion was another key focus, with Mujung advocating for unity among Central Equatoria’s diverse communities.
“The governor emphasised that promoting unity is critical to building a stronger, more resilient state,” Aligo said. “He urged citizens and leaders alike to embrace inclusivity and work together for the common good.” This call for unity comes at a time when the state seeks to overcome divisions and foster collective progress.
The meeting also served as an opportunity for Governor Mujung to familiarise himself with the State Ministers and their respective portfolios. Aligo explained that the session allowed the governor to gain insights into the ongoing work of various ministries, setting the stage for coordinated efforts to implement his policy agenda. “The governor is committed to working closely with his team to ensure that the needs of the people are met,” Aligo added.
Mujung’s appointment has generated cautious optimism among residents of Central Equatoria, who hope his leadership will bring tangible improvements. Civil society groups and local leaders have welcomed his strong stance against corruption, although some have called for concrete actions to support his promises.
