JUBA – The South Sudan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has confirmed that a tragic road accident in Duweim City, White Nile State, Republic of Sudan, has claimed the lives of 12 South Sudanese nationals and left at least 40 others injured.

Authorities report that the incident has caused deep sorrow among families and the wider South Sudanese community.

“The Ministry noticed with great concern that on 7 January 2026, the incident occurred as a result of two passenger buses colliding on the road in Duweim City, White Nile State, Republic of Sudan. One of the two passenger buses was transporting South Sudanese returnees who were on their way back to South Sudan. The incident tragically claimed the lives of 12 South Sudanese nationals and injured 40 others,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

It stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was sadly informed about the tragic road incident involving South Sudanese citizens in the Republic of Sudan.

“The Government of South Sudan was unaware of the transportation of a large number of South Sudanese nationals from Sudan to South Sudan and wishes to express once again its desire for better coordination in the future between the Sudanese and South Sudanese governments regarding the repatriation of refugees.”

The Foreign Affairs Ministry expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a quick recovery to the injured.

“The Ministry affirms close monitoring of the situation through the South Sudan Embassy in Port Sudan and the Sudanese Government to ensure all necessary measures are undertaken in support of the victims and their families.”
