TORIT, South Sudan -Communities in Illoli and Oguruny of Hiyala Payam, Eastern Equatoria State, have reaffirmed their commitment to peace following years of conflict that community members say has claimed many lives.
The commitment was reinforced during a three-day peace follow-up visit by Torit County Caretaker Commissioner Eddy William Ponsiano, who urged both communities to uphold the resolutions reached during a peace dialogue on October 10, 2026.
The dialogue, held at Ihusai Hill, brought together representatives of the two communities to seek solutions to a longstanding dispute that community members say dates back to 2014.
According to the Office of the Caretaker Commissioner, one of the key resolutions was that individuals responsible for killings would be held accountable and required to pay compensation in line with the agreement reached by the communities.
During the follow-up visit, Ponsiano stressed the need to implement the agreement and prevent renewed violence.
The office said the commissioner urged the communities to demonstrate “genuine commitment to reconciliation, mutual understanding, and the peaceful resolution of their longstanding disputes.”
Community members welcomed the peace efforts and called for an end to hostilities, urging both sides to embrace forgiveness, unity and peaceful coexistence.
