AWEIL — Former Commissioner of Aweil West County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Stephen Wieu, has died on Sunday, 27 September 2026, after a prolonged illness.
Wieu, a political figure associated with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), passed away in Aweil Town over the weekend, according to local officials and community sources.
Chol Duang, Information Director in the Office of the Aweil West County Commissioner, confirmed Wieu’s death to Sudans Post on Monday.
Chol said the former politician died early Sunday after battling an illness for some time.
“Stephen Wieu passed away early Sunday, and he had been laid to rest in Udhum village of Mariem East Payam in Aweil County, his ancestral home,” Chol said.
According to Chol, Wieu had previously sought medical treatment in Juba before returning to Aweil, where he later died.
He said Wieu’s death has been deeply felt by members of the opposition and residents who knew him during his time in public service.
Chol described the late politician as a determined and active figure who played a role in the administration of Aweil West County during the former state structure.
“His brother says medical reports showed no clear diagnosis of the real ailment he had been suffering from. No signs were found regarding hepatitis and other infections. The family took him to Juba for treatment until he was returned to Aweil, where he passed on,” Duang said.
Duang said the family and community held burial services on Sunday at Wieu’s ancestral home, while further funeral commemorations were expected to honor his contribution to the state and its people.
Residents who knew Wieu also paid tribute to him, describing him as a courageous individual who stood against what they regarded as oppression affecting his community.
The exact cause of his death remains unclear, as no detailed medical findings have been publicly released by health authorities or his family.
Wieu’s death has drawn condolences from political associates, community members, and residents of Aweil West County, who are mourning the former commissioner and political figure.
