The incident occurred in the Naagori residential area, where witnesses reported that two teenagers were playing with fire near family homes when the situation quickly spiralled out of control. The flames spread rapidly from one structure to another, fueled by dry materials and closely built houses, before residents could mount an effective response.
Although no injuries were recorded, the damage was extensive. Several families lost all their belongings, including cash savings, food stocks, clothes, and household property. Many victims are now relying on neighbours and relatives for shelter and support.
One of the affected residents, Nyamuse Mary, described the fire as life-changing.
“All our money and food items were burnt,” she said. “I lost one million eight hundred thousand South Sudanese pounds. We lost everything, and the community and government should help us because we are in critical condition.”
Community leaders said the teenagers did not intend to cause harm but acknowledged that their actions led to devastating consequences for multiple households. They stressed the need for parents and guardians to educate children about the dangers of playing with fire.
The situation was further worsened by allegations that some individuals looted property during the confusion, taking advantage of the families’ distress.
Yambio Municipal Mayor Fozia Abbas Barnaba confirmed the destruction of six homes and strongly condemned the reported theft.
“Six houses were burnt, and many items were destroyed,” she said. “During the incident, some people stole the remaining belongings. Anyone found with the missing items will be taken into custody.” She added that the municipality would notify the state government to mobilise humanitarian assistance.
Yambio County Commissioner Angelo Bakote said he visited the scene alongside the mayor to assess the damage and express solidarity with the victims.
“Instead of helping, some individuals looted property, which is very bad,” he said. “I urge the community to come together and support those affected and avoid such behaviour.”
Police have opened investigations into the alleged looting, while local authorities continue to call for community unity and support to help the displaced families rebuild their homes and lives.
