JUBA – An ammunition store caught fire on Wednesday at Malual Chat military barrack, one kilometer south of Bor town of South Sudan’s Jonglei State, police said.
In an interview with Sudans Post on Wednesday, Jonglei State Police Commissioner, John Bak confirmed the explosion at the arms storage in Bor and stated that no injuries had been reported.
“It is the ammunition store that caught fire in Jonglei State military barrack Malual Chat, which caused the heavy gunfire sounds in the area,” said Bak.
Bak said the fire was suspected to have been caused by hot weather.
He encouraged the neighborhood to maintain its calm while assuring the public that the issue was under control.
“There is not any fighting in Bor, and I would like to tell the residents of Bor to remain in their houses as it was only the explosion of the ammunitions in the military barrack” said Bak.
Bak said there was no reason to be alarmed or panicked.
For his part, Jacob Achiek Machar, mayor of the Bor municipal council, said that the situation has been brought under control.
“There is no fighting, and there is no attack. I am urging all residents to remain calm and stay at home. You are advised to go about your normal activities,” said Machar.
“Those who run away from their homes, I am requesting you to return home; this is my appeal and the government of Jonglei state,” Machar said.
A similar incident occurred in March 2024 when an armaments store at Malual Chat near Bor was destroyed by fire that was started by a “Giant Nile lizard.”
