KUAJOK — Residents of Twic County in Warrap State are calling on politicians seeking elective positions in the upcoming elections to address the county’s poor road conditions before asking communities for their votes.
Speaking during the burial of a traditional leader in Turalei Payam, Paramount Chief Chier Ryan Ayuel urged aspiring politicians to demonstrate their commitment to local communities by delivering tangible services.
“As I was on my way to this late chief’s dignified burial, which we are attending to, I found it hard to reach here, as the roads are cut off,” Chier said.
Chief Chier said poor roads have made it difficult for residents to travel between communities and access essential services, particularly during emergencies.
“So I am appealing to you on behalf of others that you can’t get votes from the local people in the far-flung areas and later on disappear into the towns without being asked for what you promised,” he said.
He urged politicians not to seek votes from people in remote areas and then return to urban centers without fulfilling promises made during campaigns.
“It is imperative that you start first by showing us what you want to give to us before we give you votes.”
The paramount chief said the poor condition of roads has cut off access to Payam and county headquarters, leaving residents vulnerable when medical emergencies and other urgent situations arise.
He further linked poor road access to insecurity, saying difficulties in reaching affected communities can complicate responses to conflicts between neighboring communities.
Mangok Kom Nyuol, who represented Twic County authorities, said improving services requires cooperation between local authorities and communities.
“It is a work of both the local authorities and the civilians, such as contributing the hut taxes, so that we put them together for the betterment of services that we need,” Kom said.
He acknowledged the responsibility of local authorities to provide services but also called on communities to contribute to local development efforts.
The demands come as South Sudan prepares for the December 22, 2026, general elections, with politicians expected to begin or intensify campaigns and outreach to communities across the country.
