Maniin, who previously served as a youth leader in Marial Baai Payam, died at around 9:00 a.m. after reportedly falling into a well inside his compound during an epileptic episode. Family members say he had been battling epilepsy for several years.
According to his relative, Luka Mathiang Chol, the incident occurred at Maniin’s home in Mabior-Ngor village, where the well had been dug to provide water for domestic use. “We lost an intelligent and hardworking individual known as Kwach Maniin,” Chol said. “He had been suffering from epilepsy, and during the episode, he fell into the well and passed away.”
The late Maniin is being remembered as a committed community figure who dedicated much of his life to youth development and humanitarian service. Residents described him as a humble and God-fearing individual who consistently prioritised the welfare of others over his own.
“He was once a pastor and served as a manager in New Life Ministry, a church-based organisation that supports local schools in Aweil West County,” one youth member told reporters. “He also worked with World Hunger Hilfe as a compound manager before being promoted to a national staff position in Yambio.”
Relatives say it was during his time working outside the state that Maniin began experiencing symptoms of epilepsy, a condition that later worsened despite receiving treatment. Chol noted that his condition had deteriorated in recent years, even as he continued to serve his community.
His death has left a deep void in the Greater Ayat community, where many viewed him as a role model for young people and an advocate for social development. Described as a staunch Catholic and former seminarian, Maniin’s life was marked by both spiritual commitment and public service.
Medical experts say epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterised by recurrent seizures and loss of consciousness, can pose serious risks if not properly managed, particularly in environments with physical hazards. Health workers in the area have urged families to closely monitor and support individuals living with the condition to prevent similar tragedies.
As tributes continue to pour in, community leaders and residents alike are remembering Luka Kwach Maniin not only for his leadership but also for his enduring impact on the lives of those he served.
