JUBA – South Sudan army commander, General Matthew Puljang Top has said he is contesting the governorship of the country’s Unity state, according to several sources.

General Puljang was the former commander of the Special Division of South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) in Unity state’s Mayom County until his relieve last April.

Speaking to Sudans Post today, a source in Juba said General Matthew Puljang has submitted a letter to president Salva Kiir Mayardit seeking appointment for the governorship of unity state.

He said Pul has promised President Salva Kiir, in the letter, to retire from the army if that request is considered by Kiir and reiterated his lasting support for the president.

“It is true. General Matthew Puljang has submitted his documents to President Salva Kiir Mayardit asking to be appointed as the governor of Unity state,” the source said.

“He will retire from the army when president Salva Kiir appoint him,” the official said adding that “he has reiterated his support and will work  for the success of the country under President Salva Kiir.”
