The group, which includes children, women, youth, and elderly individuals, reflects the inclusive and community-wide commitment to this peace initiative.
Nyamar Lony Thichot, Jonglei State Minister of Information and Communication, emphasised the diverse composition of the group, noting that it underscores the collective desire for reconciliation and cooperation between the communities of Jonglei State and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.
Minister Nyamar attributed the success of this initiative to the collaborative efforts of the Jonglei State government, led by Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok, and the leadership of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.
Their joint commitment to dialogue and peacebuilding has paved the way for this unprecedented journey, fostering hope for a new era of mutual understanding.
A key factor enabling this historic movement is the recently constructed road linking Bor through Anyidi to Pibor, built by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
This vital infrastructure has not only facilitated safe travel for the returnees but also opened new avenues for trade, cultural exchange, and transportation between the two regions, laying the groundwork for sustained economic and social collaboration.
In a powerful gesture of solidarity, Governor Gai personally accompanied the Murle community members as far as Anyidi Payam, a move described by local officials as both peaceful and symbolic.
“The Jonglei State government remains steadfast in its commitment to working closely with the Greater Pibor Administrative Area to address long-standing challenges, including inter-communal violence, abductions, and cattle raiding,” Minister Nyamar stated.
She highlighted that these issues have historically strained relations between the two communities, but this initiative represents a turning point in their shared history.
Expressing optimism about the future, Nyamar emphasised that this journey is more than a symbolic gesture—it is a foundation for lasting development, stability, and peaceful coexistence.
“By coming together in this way, the people of Jonglei State and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area are demonstrating their shared vision for a brighter, more harmonious future,” she said.
The minister also called on all stakeholders, including community leaders, youth, and women’s groups, to support ongoing peace efforts and to build on this momentum to create a region free from conflict and division.
