AWEIL-A 12-year-old child has been confirmed dead and another child critically injured after a grenade exploded in Aweil town of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, according to official.
The deceased has been identified as Ngor Deng, 12, and the injured as Ngor Ngor, 8.
The incident happened early this week at Malual-Center Payam in a village known as Kou-yic.
The children smashed the grenade on the stone and detonated it, presumably after it had been discarded in the neighboring house.
Mr. Kiir Chan Wol, Commissioner of Aweil North County, told Sudans Post on Monday that the minor with severe injuries has been admitted to A weil State Hospital where he is receiving treatment.
“The miners died at Malual-center payam in the village called Kou-yic; as they got the grenade, they hit it many times till it exploded and killed one Ngor and injured another Ngor,” said Chan.
According to Chan, the parents’ negligence and carelessness caused the minor’s death.
He advised parents to teach their kids to be watchful around metals that seem questionable in order to prevent such occurrences in the future,
“We call on the public and parents to keep their eyes on the children who don’t have a capacity of recognition of dangerous items or metals,” he said.
These explosives might have been left behind during the turmoil with Sudan, where fighting has been ongoing since independence, according to Chan.
He claimed that landmine inspectors found it far more difficult to remove or discover them because of the territory’s size.
