PIBOR – More than 100 households have been displaced after heavy flooding hit parts of Pochalla South County in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, local authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
The disaster occurred when the Kobu River, swollen by days of continuous rainfall, overflowed its banks, sweeping through several villages and forcing families to flee their homes in search of higher ground.
Speaking to Sudans Post, the Minister of Information for Greater Pibor Administrative Area, Jacob Werchum Juok, said the floods destroyed homes, farmlands, and food stocks, leaving many families vulnerable.
“The flooding has displaced the residents in villages of Pochala South county, and most of the farmlands have been destroyed, making the lives of the displaced dire,” Juok said.
He appealed to humanitarian organisations and national authorities to intervene urgently, warning that the situation could deteriorate further if no immediate support is delivered.
“There are no supporting partners that have come to support the displaced, and we are calling on the national NGOs and international NGOs to quickly intervene in the situation,” the minister stressed.
He added that there is water born disease outbreak, which requires quick attention.
“There are outbreaks of waterborne diseases in the area, and some of the snake bites are being reported
Werchum called on national authorities and humanitarian partners to assess the extent of the damage and deliver emergency aid, though access to the flooded villages remains difficult due to poor road conditions.
Flooding is a recurring crisis in Jonglei and Greater Pibor regions, where heavy rains often cause rivers to burst their banks, displacing thousands and threatening livelihoods. With the rainy season still ongoing, authorities fear more villages along the Kobu River could soon be affected.
