BOR – Jonglei State Governor Riek Gai Kok has called on newly appointed government officials to treat public service as a solemn responsibility, urging them to prioritise accountability, transparency, and innovation as they take up their new roles.

The governor delivered the message on Friday during a swearing-in ceremony held at the Jonglei State Secretariat in Bor Town, where several officials formally assumed their positions in the state government.

“This event is not just a routine government function; it is a testament to our commitment to good governance, efficiency, and the collective aspiration of our people to see a government that truly serves their interests,” Governor Gai said.

He reminded the appointees that they now represent the face of the state government and are therefore expected to embody the principles of integrity and responsiveness that the people demand.

“As public servants, you are the face of this government, and the citizens of Jonglei State look up to you to not only uphold the principles of accountability but also to embody the spirit of innovation and responsiveness,” he emphasised.

While acknowledging the enormous challenges facing Jonglei—including persistent insecurity, intercommunal violence, and the devastating impact of seasonal floods—the governor expressed confidence that collective effort and dedication could deliver progress.

“The task before us is enormous, but with unity and hard work, we can overcome challenges and bring about the transformation our people desire,” he stressed.

Governor Gai further directed the officials to familiarise themselves with the state’s development agenda, saying their success would be measured by tangible results.

“I urge you all to study our developmental blueprint and align your efforts with the goals and priorities we have set. Beyond executing existing policies, I encourage you to introduce innovative ideas that will accelerate the progress of our dear state,” he added.

Jonglei State, one of South Sudan’s largest and most diverse regions, has long struggled with weak infrastructure, limited service delivery, and recurring cycles of violence. Analysts say the ability of the new officials to work collectively and uphold principles of good governance will be critical in restoring public trust.

The swearing-in ceremony marked the official entry of the new appointees into the state administration, with the governor tasking them to deliver practical solutions that improve the lives of citizens.
