BOR – Teachers in Jonglei State are on the brink of a strike, demanding immediate payment of outstanding salaries for March, April, and May 2025.

The Jonglei State Teachers’ Union (JSTU) has issued an urgent appeal to the National Ministry of Finance & Planning (NMoFP) and the Central Bank of South Sudan (CBSS), warning of a definitive strike if the salaries are not disbursed by Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

In a letter dated June 2, 2025, addressed to Hon. Dr. Marial Dongrin Ater, the Minister of NMoFP, John Deng Ajith, the interim chairperson of Jonglei Teachers’ Union, emphasised the critical nature of the situation.

“The delay in salary payments has placed significant financial strains on teachers, impacting their ability to perform their duties effectively,” said Ajith.

The Union highlighted the broader implications of the unpaid salaries, warning that a strike could disrupt educational activities across the state.

They stressed the importance of teachers receiving timely compensation to ensure continued focus on delivering quality education.

Ajith has called on the Ministry of Finance & Planning and the Central Bank of South Sudan to prioritise this issue and take action within the specified period, from Monday, June 2nd, 2025, to Wednesday, June 4th, 2025.

The union explicitly stated that failure to address this demand will result in a definitive strike by teachers, which they hope to avoid through prompt payment efforts.

Ajith underscores the union’s commitment to teachers’ rights, asserting that respecting these rights is synonymous with respecting children’s right to education.

The JSTU trusts that the minister will give this matter the urgent attention it deserves.

As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on the National Ministry of Finance & Planning to see if a resolution can be reached to avert a widespread teachers’ strike in Jonglei State.

Attempts by Sudans Post to reach the Jonglei State Ministry of Education for comments were unsuccessful.
