The directive was issued on Wednesday during a meeting with the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Michael Makuei Lueth, who briefed the President on ongoing investigations, cases awaiting judicial determination, legislative matters, and the overall performance of the ministry.
The meeting comes amid growing public attention on several high-profile cases involving senior political figures and government officials who have remained in detention or whose cases have yet to be concluded through the courts.
According to a statement from the Office of the President, Kiir welcomed a report on the ministry’s efforts to address pending court cases and outstanding legal matters, but emphasized the need for faster action.
The President “stressed the need for greater urgency in addressing unresolved cases,” noting that “timely and transparent justice remains essential for maintaining public confidence in state institutions and safeguarding the rights of citizens.”
Kiir also underscored the importance of preserving the integrity of South Sudan’s judicial system and ensuring that legal disputes are resolved through established judicial procedures rather than political or administrative processes.
The statement said the President highlighted that “all legal matters must be handled through established judicial procedures, with each case receiving thorough review and due consideration in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of South Sudan.”
The remarks are likely to resonate amid concerns raised by legal practitioners, civil society organizations and members of the public over delays in the resolution of some prominent criminal and political cases.
Kiir further emphasized that “a credible and effective justice system remains fundamental to ensuring fairness, accountability, and equal protection under the law,” describing the rule of law as a cornerstone of national stability and good governance.
For his part, Makuei reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to implementing the President’s directives and strengthening the delivery of legal and constitutional services across the country.
He pledged continued cooperation with relevant institutions to address outstanding legal matters and improve the effectiveness of the justice sector.
The Office of the President said the meeting reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen judicial institutions, uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is delivered promptly for all South Sudanese citizens.
