AWEIL — The chairmanship election of the Korok Community Association from Aweil North County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, scheduled for June 6 in Juba, has been postponed due to a dispute between rival supporter groups.
The election scheduled for June 6, intended to select new leadership for the association, descended into tension as supporters of competing factions disagreed over electoral procedures.
The two contenders for the chairmanship of the Korok Community Association are Larson Angok Garang and Angony Lual.
Athian Bol Ayuel, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, decided to suspend the process until further notice to prevent further confrontation.
“On behalf of the Greater Korok Community Association in Juba, we regret to inform you about the postponement based on the directives received from the Coordination Office that the Electoral Committee should announce the postponement of the upcoming Greater Korok Community Elections,” the statement reads, issued on Saturday.
Bol said the decision was taken in the interest of stability and fairness.
“This decision has not been taken lightly. The Electoral Committee tries their best to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections that reflect the true will of the people of the greater Korok Community,” he said.
He said the decision was made in line with guidance from the Coordination Office due to what he described as “unforeseen circumstances.”
In a letter, he cited irregularities that raised concerns about potential negative consequences if the election were allowed to proceed.
“The electoral committee remains committed to maintaining open communication with the public through this process,” he said.
“Further information regarding the rescheduled election date, timelines, and related procedures will be communicated promptly once confirmed by the coordination office.”
Some youths alleged that veteran musician Larson Angok mobilized young people from his hometown to stir the controversy, while others claimed that Angony Lual, who is also contesting the position, ordered the detention of some youths who support his rival.
