KUAJOK – Authorities in Kuajok Town Council in South Sudan’s Warrap State have detained two suspects accused of breaking into business premises and stealing cash and mobile phones.
Kuajok Town Mayor Atek Lual Achuil told Mayardit FM that the duo allegedly targeted a phone charging kiosk, making away with 30 mobile phones before proceeding to a nearby shop where they reportedly accessed the building through the roof on Thursday.
According to the mayor, the suspects climbed onto the rooftop, dismantled iron sheets, and entered the shop, from which they allegedly stole 1 million South Sudanese Pounds (SSP).
“What happened on Thursday night in Kuajok town is that the two suspects broke into a charging centre for phones and took 30 phones. They also went into a nearby shop, climbed onto the roof, made a break-in and took away 1 million SSP,” Achuil said.
He added that a town patrol unit responded swiftly, recovering the stolen phones. The two suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court to answer to charges of burglary and theft.
Mayor Achuil further revealed that several local traders have begun filing additional complaints against the suspects, alleging past losses. However, he clarified that such claims would be handled strictly within the confines of the law.
“Some people have begun coming forward with charges, but since they weren’t caught red-handed for those claims, the courts will address them accordingly,” he noted.
In a separate incident, police in Aweil North County of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have detained at least five youths accused of instigating violence during a traditional night drum gathering in Gok-Machar town.
Garang Anei, the area’s police inspector, told Sudanspost on Friday that the suspects allegedly sparked a fight that left several people injured. Some victims are currently receiving treatment for stab wounds.
“The boys instigated a fight, and six of them have been apprehended. The rest are on the run, but those who were knifed are being treated,” Anei said.
He urged young people to refrain from engaging in violence, especially at a time when many families are grappling with economic hardship.
Community observers say such incidents reflect broader social pressures facing the country, which continues to navigate political and security challenges. Authorities in both Warrap and Northern Bahr el Ghazal states have pledged to pursue legal action against those responsible and to strengthen local security patrols to prevent further unrest.
