In a suspension letter dated 23/10/2025, Acting State Minister of Information William Koji Kirjok, accused the platform of promoting content that “undermines the state’s image and security”.
He directed the outlet to change its name to one that reflects independence from government or political affiliation before resuming operations.
“Henceforth, Lakes State Media’s activities in Lakes State and South Sudan at large are suspended until the name is changed to an appropriate one that matches an independent organization,” Kirjok stated.
“Failure to comply will be handled by the government of Lakes State. We hope you understand the gravity of the situation and take necessary steps to rectify this issue,” he added.
Kirjok expressed concern over what he described as LSM’s “habitual actions” of hosting interviews with defected groups, rebels, and individuals opposing the government under the name Lakes State. He said while the media outlet had made positive contributions in the past, its recent content “has damaged the reputation of the state and its community.”
“We urge the management of Lakes State Media to reconsider their choice of content and stop hosting interviews and posting of political materials that go against the interests of the Lakes State government and its people,” he advised.
The acting minister further argued that airing views from rebel leaders undermines peace and stability in the state.
“By hosting interviews with defected groups and rebels, we consider that Lakes State Media is inadvertently endorsing dissent against the government,” he said. “Additionally, such coverage does not align with the name Lakes State, which should represent the values and aspirations of our community.”
In a brief statement on its official Facebook page, Lakes State Media acknowledged receiving the suspension notice and assured followers that the issue would be addressed through dialogue.
“The LSM leadership will convene a meeting in the coming hours to resolve the issue amicably. Please stay tuned for further updates,” the management wrote.
Earlier this month, the outlet also invited government critics, including Deng Bol Aruai, Dr. James Okuk, Dr. Emmanuel Sunday de John, and Abraham Awolich, to appear on its platform.
