The appeal gained momentum following a visit by a group of university-going young women under a campaign dubbed “Talk to Your Daughter”, which promotes girls’ education across the county. The initiative seeks to raise awareness on the importance of keeping girls in school while also mobilising community support for struggling learning institutions.
In a social media post shared by the Secretary General of the Talk to Your Daughter – Aweil East Girls’ Students, Maria Adut Koth Geng, she described the poor condition of Madhol Primary School and urged well-wishers, especially sons and daughters of Madhol Payam, to contribute toward its rehabilitation.
During her visit, Maria Adut noted that while the school continues to serve a large number of learners, its infrastructure has significantly deteriorated, making it difficult to provide a safe and conducive learning environment.
“Education remains the strongest foundation for peace, development and prosperity in every society,” she stated. “During my recent visit to Madhol Primary School in Madhol Payam, I was encouraged by the commitment of learners, teachers and parents towards education.”
She further highlighted that the school currently has about 900 pupils, with approximately 600 being girls, describing the enrollment as a positive sign of the community’s growing commitment to education and girls’ empowerment.
Despite this progress, she expressed concern over the condition of classrooms, many of which have damaged or missing roofs due to strong winds that hit the area years ago and remain unrepaired.
“With such a large population of learners, improving the school infrastructure has become a pressing need,” she added, warning that the current state of the classrooms does not support effective learning.
Maria Adut made a direct appeal to prominent figures originating from the area, urging them to take responsibility and support the reconstruction efforts. She specifically mentioned senior leaders, including the Vice President for the Economic Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, former officials such as Kiir Yor Lual, and detained former Vice President for the Economic Cluster Benjamin Bol Mel, calling on them to contribute financially or mobilise resources for the school’s renovation.
“Therefore, with utmost respect and humility, I appeal to our distinguished leaders and sons of Madhol Payam to come together and support the renovation of Madhol Primary School so that our children can learn in a better environment,” she said.
Community members and campaigners also urged the state government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State to engage development partners and prioritise the rehabilitation of schools affected by infrastructure decay. They further emphasised the importance of sustained investment in girls’ education as part of broader efforts toward women’s empowerment and community development.
As the appeal continues to circulate online and within the community, residents hope it will translate into concrete action to restore Madhol Primary School to a safe and functional learning environment for hundreds of children.
