Malong demotes SSUF/A general to private, dismisses him from movement

In an Executive Order No. 17/2026, dated 21 July 2026, Malong said the action was taken under Articles 20.3, 20.4, and 20.7 of the SSUF/A Constitution (2021) after "carefully" considering the findings and recommendations of the SSUF/A Investigation Committee.

NAIROBI – South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) Chairman and Commander-in-Chief Gen. Paul Malong Awan has relieved Brig. Gen. Marko Kenyang Akoon of his duties, stripped him of his rank, and dismissed him from the movement following the recommendations of an internal investigation committee.

In an Executive Order No. 17/2026, dated 21 July 2026, Malong said the action was taken under Articles 20.3, 20.4, and 20.7 of the SSUF/A Constitution (2021) after “carefully” considering the findings and recommendations of the SSUF/A Investigation Committee.

The order immediately removes Marko from his position as Director General of Logistics and Procurement.

“Brig. Gen. Marko Kenyang Akoon is hereby relieved of his position as Director General of Logistics and Procurement, with immediate effect,” the order states.

Malong also ordered that Marko be stripped of his rank of brigadier general and demoted to the rank of private, describing the decision as being in line with the recommendations of the investigation committee.

The order further states that “Private (PVT) Marko Kenyang Akoon is hereby dismissed from the membership and service of the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A), with immediate effect.”

The SSUF/A leader directed the Office of the Chief of General Staff and all relevant administrative authorities to implement the decision immediately and complete all administrative procedures arising from it.

The executive order took effect on the date it was signed by Malong, a former SPLA General Chief of Staff.

The statement did not disclose the allegations investigated by the committee or the reasons behind its recommendation to relieve, demote, and dismiss Marko. It also did not indicate whether the former officer had been allowed to respond to the findings.

SSUF/A is one of South Sudan’s armed opposition groups led by former army chief Gen. Paul Malong, who has been based outside the country since breaking away from the government.

The movement has experienced internal leadership disputes and defections in recent years and remains a holdout group to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan.
