MAYOM — Four men from Mayom County in Unity State have been arrested in connection with the alleged raiding of 51 cattle from Tonj North County in Warrap State.
The suspects were reportedly apprehended last week after the cattle were taken from Tonj North and traced to Mayom County.
John Bol Mayak, Commissioner of Mayom County, confirmed to Sudans Post on Thursday that four men had been arrested in connection with the raiding of 51 cattle from Tonj North.
“The reason they were arrested was the issue of created insecurity between Warrap State and Mayom County because they went to raid cattle from 51 Tonj North County,” Bol said.
The commissioner said the four men suspects are under detention, and they will be taken to court any time.
He said the handover of the 51 recovered cattle, which had been taken from criminals accused of raiding them, was aimed at restoring calm and preventing further insecurity.
Bol said the security situation in the area remains normal, attributing this to cooperation between the two administrations to control the movement of armed youth and prevent further cattle-related violence.
For his part, Agany Lok Agany, Commissioner of Tonj North County, welcomed the arrest of four men in Unity State in connection with the recent raid of cattle from Tonj North County.
“We are appreciating the government of the Unity State for arresting armed criminals that raided cattle from Tonj North County of Warrap State,” said Agany.
On September 7, authorities in Mayom County, an oil-rich region of Unity State, recovered and returned 51 cows allegedly stolen from Warrap State in an effort to strengthen cooperation and prevent cattle-related tensions between the two communities.
The cattle were reportedly raided in August by a group of youth from Mayom County, who allegedly took them from Ariec cattle camp in Tonj North County, Warrap State.
The attack on the Ariec cattle camp left 60 people dead and injured 37 others.
Cows were handed over by Commissioner of Mayom County, John Bol Mayak, to Commissioner of Tonj North County, Agany Lok Agany, on Saturday in Tonj North County.
