BENTIU — Authorities in Mayom County of oil-rich region, Unity State, have recovered and returned 51 cows allegedly stolen from Warrap State in an effort to strengthen cooperation and prevent cattle-related tensions between the two communities.
The cattle were reportedly raided in August by a group of youth from Mayom County, who allegedly took them from Ariec cattle camp in Tonj North County, Warrap State.
The attack on the Ariec cattle camp left 60 people dead and injured 37 others.
Cows were handed over by Commissioner of Mayom County, John Bol Mayak, to Commissioner of Tonj North County, Agany Lok Agany, on Saturday in Tonj North County.
Speaking during the handover ceremony on Saturday, Mayom County Commissioner John Bol Mayak said the 51 cattle were recovered from armed cattle raiders.
Bol said the handover was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two states in combating cattle raiding and promoting peace along their shared borders.
“The administration of Governor Dr. Joseph Manytuil Wejang is highly committed to taking firm action against cattle raiding and other criminal activities,” Bol said.
“We also ask the authorities of Warrap State to return the cattle that were raided from the communities in Mayom County.”
He said such cooperation is crucial to building lasting peace, trust, and confidence between the two states.
He further said the handover, carried out with the support of Unity State Governor Dr. Joseph Manytuil Wejang, demonstrates the authorities’ commitment to recovering raided livestock and returning it to its rightful owners.
For his part, Tonj North County Commissioner Agany Lok Agany commended the Unity State government and Mayom County authorities for recovering and returning the stolen cattle.
“My appreciation goes to the Government of Unity State and the authorities of Mayom County for recovering and returning the stolen cattle,” Agany said.
Agany said the gesture would help strengthen trust and confidence between the two administrations.
He reaffirmed his commitment to continued cooperation with Mayom authorities in addressing cattle-related conflicts and promoting peaceful coexistence between the communities.
