Aweil — South Sudan’s Ministry of Health on Friday inaugurated a modern 100-bed capacity hospital built by the United Arab Emirates in Aweil East County of Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State, about 64 kilometers south of the Sudanese border.
Madhol Field Hospital will host key departments, including the emergency unit and intensive care, as well as a specialized unit.
It will offer treatment to approximately 2 million South Sudanese, 300,000 returnees, 15,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs), and 20,000 refugees from Sudan.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Dr. Annin Ngot Ngot, Health Ministry Undersecretary, conveyed his appreciation for the facility’s generosity, which will lower the cost of the treatment journey to Juba.
“Madhal Field Hospital will greatly contribute to our goal of offering universal health care by bringing quality health services closer to the people of this region,” said Ngot.
“I urge all stakeholders involved to work hard because the success of this hospital will reduce the cost and all forms of stress associated with the search for quality health care in other parts of the country or internationally.”
Sheikh Shakhboot Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the Madhal field hospital would serve both Sudanese refugees and South Sudanese.
“The opening of Madhal Hospital with an initial capacity of 100 beds and several specialized clinics to serve more than 60,000 people in Madhal and neighboring areas,” said Sheikh.
Governor Simon Ober Mawut, Governor of Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State, said that Aweil State Referral Hospital’s strain would be lessened by the new hospital.
“This state-of-the-art medical facility could not have come at a better time when our people face immense health challenges in light of the influx of refugees and returnees fleeing conflict in the Sudan,” Mawut said.
