AWEIL — A 60-year-old community chief has died after being knocked down by a motorbike in Mangar-Gier Boma, Panthou Payam, Aweil South County of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State.
The incident occurred on Thursday as the deceased, identified as Arol Mayom Arol, was reportedly walking home from the market when a motorbike rider travelling from Tiar-Aliet Payam struck him.
Victor Garang Geng, the administrator of Panthou Payam, told Sudans Post on Friday the victim sustained a severe leg fracture and was taken to Aweil Civil Hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries.
“Around 6:00, the rider was coming from Tiar-Aliet Payam when he met the old man identified as Arol Mayom Arol and ran into him,” Garang said.
According to the payam administrator, the incident shocked residents because Arol had reportedly spent part of the day at the market before beginning his journey home.
Garang appealed for calm among the victim’s relatives and the wider community as preparations for the burial continue.
He said traffic authorities are investigating the incident and that the law would take its course.
“We are urging people to remain calm as the dignified burial is being done, and the law will take its course as it is expected always,” Garang said.
The country department of traffic has warned motorbike riders against excessive speed, saying reckless riding can result in serious injuries or deaths involving both riders and pedestrians.
The traffic department also urged pedestrians to remain vigilant and observe traffic rules when crossing or walking along roads.
They further cautioned motorbike riders against driving under the influence of tramadol and other drugs, which they said can contribute to road accidents.
The authorities urged road users to exercise greater caution to prevent further loss of lives in the area.
