JUBA – Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has condemned the attack on Morobo County Hospital in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State, which occurred on the night of Friday, 20 June 2025.
“The armed individuals stole medical supplies, robbed staff of their belongings, and set ablaze two ambulances at the hospital. While no staff or patients sustained physical injuries during this incident, such acts of violence severely undermine the already fragile provision of critical healthcare services in an area where communities face limited access to essential medical care,” MSF stated in a statement seen by Sudan Post.
It noted that Morobo County Hospital is one of the Ministry of Health facilities supported by MSF in Yei and Morobo counties.
The humanitarian agency added that it supports the maternity unit of the hospital through the provision of medical supplies, medical training, and bedside coaching, as well as contributions to staff salaries. No MSF staff were at the facility during the attack.
“The volatile security situation in Yei and Morobo counties continues to present persistent challenges for the delivery of medical and humanitarian services. In May, for instance, MSF made the difficult decision to reduce its outreach services in Yei County due to increased insecurity, disrupting access to healthcare for many vulnerable communities.”
MSF stated that attacks on healthcare facilities are a grave violation of international humanitarian law and are utterly unacceptable.
“MSF urgently calls on all parties to the ongoing conflict in South Sudan to uphold their obligations to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, including health workers, patients, and medical facilities. Hospitals must never be targeted.”
On Friday, a hospital in Morobo County in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State was raided by alleged members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO), who also burnt down two ambulances.
Charles Data Bullen said on Saturday that the group raided the health facility on Friday night, resulting in the destruction of two ambulances and the theft of medical equipment and recently supplied drugs.
“The attack occurred at 10:30 pm and involved 30 minutes of gunfire,” he said in a statement seen by Sudan Post. “The attackers, who came in large numbers, also confiscated personal property, including laptops and phones, from hospital staff,” Data added.
