YAMBIO — Nearly 2,000 former Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) officers who defected to the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) in Western Equatoria State are still awaiting integration into the national army more than a year later.

The 1,924 officers, led by Major General Edward Razig Joseph, Acting SPLA-IO Sector 6 Commander, defected on April 17, 2025, citing their commitment to peace and stability in the state.

Speaking during a meeting with Western Equatoria State Governor Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa on Wednesday, Maj. Gen. Razig said the prolonged delay in their integration has negatively affected the welfare and morale of the defected forces.

He revealed that a national integration committee is expected to arrive in Yambio next week to begin the long-awaited process. He urged all registered members to report promptly.

“Anyone who fails to report should not blame anyone, as the committee will be in Yambio next week. Forces from Mundri, Maridi, and Nzara will assemble at the SSPDF barracks in Yambio for the exercise,” Razig said.

The officers appealed to the state government to fast-track their integration, stressing that delays have left many without access to necessities such as food, medical care, and salaries.

SSPDF Commander in Western Equatoria State, Maj. Gen. Bior Kuir Deng commended the former SPLA-IO officers for their decision to join government forces, describing it as a significant step toward peace in the region.

He, however, emphasised the need for a transparent and fair integration process, warning against favouritism in rank allocation.

“The integration must be conducted properly without bias. Those who were not part of the process should not be given ranks or promotions unfairly,” Bior said.
“Be patient as the committee arrives next week. I understand the hardships you have faced without food, medicine, and other basic needs.”

Governor Rimbasa also welcomed the defectors, praising their decision to abandon armed struggle in favour of peace and community stability.

He encouraged those still in opposition-held areas to lay down arms and join the peace process.

“Those who remain in the bush should come out and join their colleagues. There is a future in peace — with opportunities for work, family, and stability,” Rimbasa said.

The governor noted that he had previously engaged national authorities in Juba to push for the integration of the forces and expressed optimism that the upcoming committee would deliver results.

The defected officers reaffirmed their commitment to peace and called for transparency in rank harmonisation, deployment, and access to salaries upon integration.

Governor Rimbasa assured them that their concerns would be forwarded to the national government and urged calm and cooperation as the process unfolded.

The state deputy governor, SSPDF leadership, National Security representatives, and SPLM-IO officials attended the meeting.
