AWEIL — A non-governmental organization in South Sudan, Humanity and Inclusion, conducted a training session on Saturday for 30 local community members in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State to promote disability inclusion in the state.
The training aims to promote equality and prevent discrimination, as many individuals behave negatively towards people with disabilities.
Speaking during the conclusion of training in Aweil on Saturday, Maria Alual, humanitarian action officer with the Humanity and Inclusion organization, said the training brought together 30 participants from various walks of life, including individuals with disabilities.
“We are aiming at bringing these people together so that their rights are acknowledged. Even in schools the access to classes can be considered as these are people in the midst of our environment,” said Alual.
Alual stated that the participants received training on the significance of inclusion in all public spaces.
She emphasized the importance of representing the interests of individuals with special needs, including those who are visually or hearing impaired, who frequently experience a sense of neglect.
“Even during the distribution of powers in all public places and even for humanitarian aid, they have to be put into consideration.”
She stated that they will ensure inclusion of persons with special needs in public spaces as well as ensure their rights are protected.
“We have brought together people of different walks of life, including the stakeholders and government officials, so that they go and advocate for the rights of persons with special needs,” she said.
“This is something that we want to get done by our people in the rural areas and even in the public offices,” she said.
She stated that individuals with disabilities have often been marginalized for an extended period, including in government institutions, as there is a perception that they may not be able to contribute to their communities.
