JUBA – The Office of the Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) has confirmed that Jemma Nunu Kumba is in Nairobi, Kenya, for a routine medical check-up, dismissing social media reports alleging that she collapsed in her office and was rushed abroad for emergency treatment.

In a press release issued on February 25, 2026, the Speaker’s Office described the circulating claims as false and misleading, clarifying that the trip to Nairobi was planned and part of standard health management.

“We wish to clarify that the Rt. Hon. Speaker is currently in Nairobi for a routine medical check-up, a standard medical practice that many citizens undertake as part of responsible and effective health management,” the statement said.

The Office emphasised that the Speaker is in good health and remains in high spirits. It added that she will resume her official duties upon completion of the scheduled check-up.

Rumours had spread widely on social media platforms alleging that the Speaker had been found unconscious in her office and urgently evacuated to Nairobi. The reports triggered public concern and speculation about her condition and the functioning of parliamentary leadership.

Responding to the claims, the Office stressed that issues relating to the health of the head of the national legislature are sensitive and can have broader implications for national stability and institutional confidence.

The statement urged individuals, particularly public officials and those in leadership positions, to refrain from speculation and the dissemination of unverified information regarding anyone’s health status.

“Irresponsible reporting and politically charged insinuations not only mislead the public but also risk undermining confidence in national institutions,” the Office said.

The Transitional National Legislative Assembly plays a key role in South Sudan’s governance system, including lawmaking and oversight of the executive. As such, developments concerning its leadership often attract heightened public attention.

The Office concluded by thanking the public for their concern and reassuring the nation that Speaker Nunu remains committed to her constitutional responsibilities and service to the people of South Sudan.
