YAMBIO – Police in Yambio have arrested one suspect in connection with the alleged gang rape of a young woman and launched a manhunt for three other suspects who remain at large.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred along Masia Road in Yambio town, where the victim was reportedly attacked and raped by four men.

Speaking to Sudans Post, a community leader in Yambio, John Henry, confirmed the incident and said police swiftly arrested one suspect, while investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining three.

“One suspect is currently in police custody, and police are still searching for the others. All of them will be arrested. Cases of gender-based violence are increasing in Yambio,” Henry said.

Henry expressed concern over women’s safety, particularly those moving alone or at night, and linked the rising cases of rape and gender-based violence to substance abuse.

“Women moving alone at night are at high risk, and drug abuse among some youth is contributing to rape and GBV cases,” he added.

Meanwhile, a source at the Ministry of Gender, who requested anonymity over authorization concern to speak to the media, said the survivor is receiving medical treatment and psychosocial support.

“The woman is under treatment with support from Eve Organization. She is receiving counselling and psychosocial care,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, Western Equatoria State Police Commissioner, Maj. Gen. Phillip Madut Tong, said the case is under active investigation.

“The incident occurred in Yambio town, where four men allegedly raped a woman. One suspect has been arrested, and police are pursuing the remaining three. Investigations are ongoing,” he said.

Police stated that the detainee is cooperating with investigators, while efforts continue to track down the other suspects.

Authorities also confirmed that the survivor’s safety and dignity are being prioritized as she continues to receive medical and psychosocial assistance.

Police in Yambio have strongly condemned the incident and warned that sexual and gender-based violence will not be tolerated.

“Those involved in criminal activities, including rape, will be arrested and taken to court to face the law,” police said.

They further appealed to the public to cooperate with security forces by providing information that could help in the arrest of the remaining suspects.

Sexual violence remains a serious concern in parts of Western Equatoria State, with activists and community leaders calling for stronger law enforcement, increased community awareness, and sustained support for survivors.

Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that all those involved in the crime are brought to justice.
