The appeal is contained in RJMEC’s latest Quarterly Report covering the period from 1 April to 30 June 2026, which warns that South Sudan’s peace process has reached a critical stage amid continued political and security challenges.
RJMEC urged international partners to sustain political engagement and coordinate diplomatic efforts aimed at supporting the full implementation of the peace agreement.
It also appealed for stronger backing of the proposed African Union C5 Plus inclusive South Sudanese political dialogue, describing it as essential for resolving the current political impasse, rebuilding trust among the parties to the agreement, and securing a peaceful and democratic conclusion of the Transitional Period.
With national elections scheduled for 22 December 2026, the Commission emphasized the need for continued technical assistance to electoral institutions, particularly in civic and voter education, electoral operations, and promoting the participation of women, youth, internally displaced persons, refugees, and other marginalized groups.
Beyond elections, RJMEC stressed that humanitarian needs continue to grow due to conflict, displacement, and food insecurity.
It called on development partners to expand support for humanitarian operations, recovery programmes, food security interventions, and durable solutions for millions of displaced South Sudanese.
The Commission further encouraged international partners to invest in strengthening state institutions through support for institution-building, economic governance reforms, and public financial management systems aimed at improving accountability and effective service delivery.
In addition, RJMEC appealed for enhanced international support to initiatives that protect civic space, promote human rights, advance gender equality, operationalize transitional justice mechanisms, and encourage inclusive political participation as the country prepares for its first elections under the Revitalised Peace Agreement.
The Commission warned that although modest progress has been recorded in some areas, unresolved political disputes, incomplete security arrangements, continued violence, humanitarian pressures, and funding constraints continue to threaten implementation of the peace agreement and could undermine the credibility of the planned elections if left unaddressed.
RJMEC reaffirmed that sustained regional and international engagement will remain critical in supporting South Sudan’s transition and called on all stakeholders to work collectively to preserve the gains of the peace agreement and help the country achieve lasting peace, stability, and a successful democratic transition.
