KUAJOK – Authorities in Gogrial West County of Warrap State have detained two police officers accused of taking part in the looting of fuel from a tanker that overturned and later exploded, killing at least eight people.
The officers, identified as Abraham Mapet, believed to be in his 40s, and Akot Nyal, aged around 30, were part of the first police unit dispatched to secure the scene and prevent civilians from siphoning fuel. Instead, they allegedly coordinated the looting.
Gogrial West Police Inspector Victor Awang Koor told local radio station Mayardit FM that the two officers have been arrested and will face legal action for violating police conduct. He said the suspects were among the first responders who arrived at the scene alongside the county commissioner.
“Those detained were seen ordering residents to bring jerrycans and fill them with fuel,” Koor said. “They were deployed to protect the site, but instead abused their authority.”
According to the inspector, while residents were focused on the casualties from the crash, the officers allegedly organised the siphoning of fuel, with some of it later discovered stored in drums at a nearby market.
Koor added that the arrests were made after community members tipped off authorities, identifying the officers involved. They were subsequently taken to Kuajok for further investigation.
Awan Rieu Payam police officer Ajal Bol Bol also confirmed the incident, describing the officers’ actions as a sign of desperation and a serious breach of integrity.
“The officers were caught red-handed alongside civilians. This shows a lack of discipline, and they must face the consequences,” he said.
The incident occurred last week when a fuel tanker supplying stations across Warrap overturned. Efforts by the driver and others to extract fuel from the damaged vehicle reportedly triggered an explosion, resulting in fatal injuries. Several victims were rushed to St. Theresa Hospital and later referred to Wau for treatment, but many succumbed to their injuries.
Police say the detained officers will be formally charged as investigations continue.
