Police rescue 11 suspected victims of human trafficking in Juba

The two Eritrean and nine Somali nationals were rescued in the Mangateen residential area, a suburb of Juba, on 6th January 2025.

JUBA-The South Sudan National Police Service has rescued 11 suspected victims of human trafficking in Juba.

The two Eritrean and nine Somali nationals were rescued in the Mangateen residential area, a suburb of Juba, on 6th January 2025.

Details surrounding their rescue and how they entered the country are still sketchy as of Wednesday.

Col. John Kassara Koang Nhial, police spokesperson, said the victims are being held by the police while an investigation is conducted.

“On January 6, 2025, two Eritrean and nine Somali nationals were apprehended in the Mangateen residential area. An investigation is ongoing, as there is a suspected network in smuggling,” Nhial said in a statement on the summary of the general situation.

Regarding the general situation across the country, Col. Nhial reported that it has been calm and normal over the past two days, with only minor incidents reported in certain states.

He said that on January 5, 2025, a 60-year-old major general, who was the deputy director of the NPSSS in the Pibor Administrative area, collapsed and died on the spot. His body will be brought to Juba for burial.

“A 20-year-old female attempted to commit suicide after a quarrel with her husband in the Naivasha residential area of Awiel town on January 6, 2025, at around 8:45 a.m. A criminal case has been initiated at the Awiel town police station,” he added.

He also reported that a man was assaulted and killed with a knife in Awiel East County by three suspects who were under the influence of alcohol on January 6, 2025, at around 7:30 p.m.

“On January 6, 2025, at around 3:00 p.m., a 12-year-old boy drowned in a river while fishing in Pibor. On the same day at around 4:30 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was killed by a 28-year-old man in the Mudiria residential area of Malakal. The suspect has been arrested, and an investigation is ongoing,” he stated.

He further noted that on January 6, 2025, at around 10:00 a.m., a 24-year-old female attempted to commit suicide in Maluth County but was rescued. The incident was related to family matters.

Additionally, he reported that a 31-year-old man was killed by a 35-year-old man in Palaing Payam of Tonj East County on January 6, 2025, at around 6:00 p.m. A case has been initiated at the Tonj East County police station.
